Dealing With Mould in Your Home? What I Did—and What Helped Me
Have you ever discovered mould in your home?
If you have, you know how unsettling it can be.
I know because I’ve been there myself.
When I was dealing with mould in my own home, I knew that the ultimate solution was to identify the source of the moisture and properly address the mould. But the reality is that remediation doesn’t always happen immediately.
Sometimes you’re waiting for a contractor.
Sometimes you’re dealing with insurance.
Sometimes you’re trying to figure out where the moisture is coming from.
And sometimes, for financial or practical reasons, you simply can’t have the entire problem addressed right away.
That was the situation I found myself in.
And I didn’t want to just sit there and wait.
I wanted to do something in the meantime to help improve the indoor environment in my home.
That’s when I discovered the Hi Tech Air Solutions Reactor.
Mould Isn’t Always Where You Can See It
One of the things I learned while dealing with mould is that what you can see isn’t necessarily the whole problem.
Mould can grow behind walls, underneath flooring, around windows, in basements, crawl spaces, HVAC systems, and other areas where moisture has accumulated.
And even when you know there is a problem, it can take time to get professional remediation underway.
That’s why I became interested in the AirTech Reactor.
It gave me another tool I could use while I worked on addressing the underlying problem.
So What Exactly Does the AirTech Reactor Do?
This is what I found particularly interesting about the technology.
The AirTech Reactor isn’t simply a traditional air purifier that captures particles in a filter.
It uses photocatalytic technology and UV-C light to generate hydroxyl radicals (OH).
Hydroxyl radicals are highly reactive molecules that can interact with organic contaminants in the environment.
According to the manufacturer and owner who I spoke with directly, the technology is designed to help address contaminants including:
- Mold spores
- Mycotoxins
- VOCs (volatile organic compounds)
- Bacteria
- Viral particles
- Odors and other organic contaminants
The idea is that these hydroxyl radicals travel throughout the environment and interact with contaminants, helping to break them down through oxidation.
That is very different from simply trapping something in a filter.
What About VOCs?
This was another reason I became interested in the Reactor.
VOCs—or volatile organic compounds—are chemicals that can be released from many products and materials found inside our homes.
They can come from:
- Paints and finishes
- Cleaning products
- Furniture and furnishings
- Building materials
- Adhesives
- Solvents
- Other household products
Hydroxyl radicals are highly reactive and can interact with organic compounds, helping to break them down.
So when I was looking at the AirTech Reactor, I wasn’t thinking only about mould.
I was thinking about the overall indoor environment. Because I have environmental sensitivities this was a bonus for me.
What About COVID and Other Viruses?
The technology is also designed to help reduce certain airborne microorganisms, including viral particles.
Rather, hydroxyl-based air purification technology has been studied for its ability to reduce or inactivate certain microorganisms, including viruses.
For me, that was another reason I found the technology interesting.
Because our indoor air can contain much more than just mould.
What Do You Do If You Can’t Remediate Right Away?
This is really the reason I’m sharing my experience.
If you discover mould, the first priority should be addressing the source of the moisture.
If professional remediation is necessary, that should be pursued.
But what happens if you can’t get remediation done tomorrow?
Do you simply do nothing?
That’s not what I wanted to do.
I wanted to take reasonable steps to support the indoor environment while I worked toward resolving the bigger problem.
For me, the AirTech Reactor became part of that strategy.
It wasn’t a replacement for remediation. It was something I could use while I was dealing with the situation.
And personally, having something working in my home gave me a sense that I was taking action rather than simply waiting.
My Experience Is Why I’m Sharing This
I don’t recommend products simply because someone tells me they work.
I like to use things myself and understand how they fit into the bigger picture. Because we were dealing with mould in our home we rented a cottage this summer and when we arrived the cottage smelt like mould. You can image how upset I was.
